PPA Northern Advocate, 22 February 1910, Page 3
MR JOHN DWYER
There passed away on Saturday morning at the Whangarei Hospital one of our oldest identities, in the person of Mr John Dwyer of Otaika. He came over with his father, Mr John Dwyer, from the Northern Wairoa in 1856. Mr Dwyer, sen., had a homestead adjoining Tangiteroria? the old Wesleyan mission station. They " brought a lot of Cattle with them to their new farm' at Otaika, and settled there, and these cattle used to run out to the Maungakaramea district. There were no settlers in that district then, nor yet in Mangapai. The writer of this was the first settler in Maungakaramea, and the road we generally travelled t(| Whangarei was by the Dwyer's homestead. The Dwyer family consisted of John Dwyer, senr., th? late John Dwyer (his son), and his two sisters. The traveller, if beni>j;hi;ed, could be certain of receiving true' Irish . hospitality. The late Mr | Dwyer was two years of age when he came with his father from New South Wales to ,the Northern Wairqa Messes McGregor, Wilson, and Watson, came in vessels right into Kaipara, and some of these old settlers had never been in Auckland. The late Mr Dwyer was, I believe, 72 years of age on last August. He was a strong hardy man, and endured the I hardships which the early settlers had to put up with. He was a good Maori scholar, and if in a room with Maoris . one couldn't tell from the conversation that there was a pakeha present. He was also a splendid horseman. In his young days his father and he used to send ship loads of cattle, to 'Auckland. Cattle were worth money in those days, as you would get from £15 to £20 for a fat bullock. The late Mr Dwyer has left a fine family of sons and daughters behind, and a good number of grandchildren. John Dwyer immigrated to NSW to Kaipara in 1840.1

The first born daughter Emma Amelia Wright may have married John Winterscale Davys in Auckland 19 July 1852. After marriage they did live in Parnell, where they had 2 or 3 children before moving to Dunedin. The marriage record doesn't show her father's name and her death record shows her father as John. This might be because, her husband John had a broad accent, so Tom (Thomas) may have sounded like John. KEMO

OBIT
One of the pioneers of the New Zealand mercantile marine, m the person of Captain John Winterscale Davys, I father of Mr A. D. Davys, -of this town, passed away at Christcharch on Friday last -at the age of 83. Mr Davys many years ago commanded small sailing vessels, which in' those dajte were the sole means of communication between port and port on the New Zealand coast. He waa ono of the earliest traders to Poverty _ Bay, and it is understood brought the first load of sheep to this district; A tnan of sterling character, he was greatly esteemed. For a number of years he lived m retirement at Dune- ; din, and some little time ago removed to Christchurch, where one df his sons and his daughter reside. At the annual meeting of the Huntly Rod and Curf Club, Mr F. Harris, of Matahuru, wrote strongly on the deprei Nations of quail. > "In this district," he , 'stated, '^Californian quail have so multiplied during the past few years as to become a pest. It is a common thing to see flocks of 50 of these birds. Farmers look upon them as vermin, and it ie has been suggested that they would be ! justified m laying poison for. them. It is almost useless now to sow clover ! seed on the surface, for the quail get' the j major portion, and none of us can afford I to feed sporting birds at ls per lb. I haye teen birds shot early m the season with their crops full of clover seed." On the increase m the number of -pheasants,' Mr Harris was equally emphatic, his potato and corn crops, and i those of his neighbors, having .suffered severely. Last season the pheasants hatched out twice, and hence tho increase. Mr Harris's statements were corroborated by several of those who , had shot over his place with very conj considerable success.
