John Howe
M, #19734, b. about 1800
Biography
John Howe was a whaler. Thank you for the info that I have obtained and to let youknow how excited i was to find your page. I ame searching for a john howe who was a whaler who came to NZ with a woman called Jane(Heni) Nuka from hawaii. but no nothing more that that he registered his son in Russell as Hone Hau Howe. As customery in nz in that period maori tribes often fostered other people into their families and often honoured them bu giving them by giving their children maori names. also in that period the language of the other islands was still very similar to maori and so jane would have been able to understand the maoris as in the hawaian island there is stil an small island that has a dialect of hawaiian similar to the maori language as is still spoken today as we know all polynesian languages have been influenced bu European missionaries and written as such.NZ is now going thru something similar with the newer version of Maori. John Howe was an american whaler in the period of 1800-1900. also many maori names were anglicised and english word maorified so it mus have been a fun period but difficult for us to find
I am alos looking for a james mackintosh who was in the british military pre and post maori war period as my grt grt grandfather was a military man at that time and I believe came with the militia helping the eurpoean settlers to settle in.I am unable to find anythin of him altho i have come across a james McIntosh? but then I lost the info.
I would be please for anything you might have. Thank you
Joanne Howe .I am 73 yrs old and enjoying doing familyresearch. JoH
Our John Howe was a mariner (Whaling boat captain) during the whaling period in Russell (Whangamumu Whaling Station) and on one of his trips down south he brought with him hjis wife and 2 sons. One son was registered in 1852 as Hone Hau HOWE and we believe he could have been at least 5 or 6 yrs old. His wife Jane Nuka came with him but she was fromHawaii either Oahu or Maui. She was called Heni (translation of Jane in Maori) and their son John(Hone) Hau HOWE.It is assumed that Hau was the translationof Howe by the Maoris but John Howe was known to be an American Jew and on research found many HAU's in Germany as well as amongst the Jewish people. He returned to the USA with the older son who may have been made part of the crew. It is not know for sure if John Howe ever came back to reside in NZ but the is a well known story of his son Hone rowing his boat 'backwards'(facing the front of the rowboat) from Rawhiti (just out of Russell) to Russell to see his father so its a possibility he could have come back and if so which John Howe is he in that area and period. Also there are many Nuka's in Hawaii with a lot more in Alaska. and Nuka isn't NZ maori in that period. With the whaling trade plying from Alaska to NZ down thru San Francisco and Hawaii it can be expected but this man eludes my search as there HOWE's in Massachusetts who were HAU and HOWE from Europe including Britain. I have found a John Howe with a wife Jane in USA.with whereabouts I don't know. JoH
