An inquest was held at the Donnybrook Hotel, in the District of Mongonui, on Friday, the 17th day of May. 1567, before William Bertram White, Esq., Coroner for the above District, touching the death of Thomas Flavell, when the following evidence was adduced:? John Flavell, being sworn, saith, ?That I am the brother of deceased. I was with him on Saturday fortnight (27th April, 1867), at the Parawanui Bush. He was splitting a piece of wood with an axe; the axe glanced off the wood and struck his foot. I assisted in taking him into a hut, and bandaged his foot up. Tobacco was put in the wound to stop tho bleeding. It bled very much. We kept him there till next morning; this happened in the evening about 5 o'clock. We brought him on a horse next morning. He complained very much of it hurting him. We brought him up the river in a boat from Mr. Whitehead's place, and put him where he is now Leedham Whitehead was with us when the accident happened, and saw it. Francis Hollis Wood, being duly sworn, states: I ain a duly qualified and registered medical practitioner; I was called in on Sunday afternoon after his arrival, to attend deceaseds I found he had a largo incised wound on the top of the right foot, penetrating the bones of the tarsul and going a considerable depth, completely dividing arteries, veins, nerves, and tendons, as it passed. I dressed the wound, and prescribed proper remedies for him. Ths case went on satisfactorily until Wednesday evening last, when I found symptoms of pyemia coming on ; he rapidly got worse, notwithstanding the proper treatment, and died this morning. I attribute his death solely to the wound. Thero were no means of preventing the pyemia. By the Coroner: We tie arteries, but not veins, and there was no possibility of tying the veins. The arteries injured were not sufficiently large to admit of tying. It would have been useless to have taken the leg off as the disease was taken up with the blood through the veins. It might have hastened his death. The following verdict was found :?" That the deceased, Thomas Flavell, junr., died from the effects of an incised wound in the top of the right foot, accidentally" by himself, with an axe, whilst chopping wood in the Parawanui Bush, on Saturday, the 27th of April last, and so the jurors, aforesaid, upon their oath, aforesaid, do say that the said Thomas Flavell, junr., in manner and by the means aforesaid, accidentally, casually, and by misfortune came to his death, and not otherwise."
