Marriages and family
In 1842 at Mangonui, he married twice-widowed Elizabeth Barnard Merritt née Newell, widow of James Merritt with whom she had three children, and of Richard Barnard with whom she had six children. However, she deserted him in 1846 and returned to live in Australia where she died in 1878.
In Kaitaia, were recorded the baptisms of four children of Thomas Flavell, innkeeper of Mangonui, by a native woman or women: in 1842 - Jane, by Heika Ill; and Joseph, by Heika Ill and "a European"; in 1853 - James, and John, with their mother's name not recorded.
On 5 September 1846 in the New Zealander, Thomas Flavell of Mangonui gives notice of the desertion of his wife.
On 10 March 1849 in the New Zealander, William Butler sues Thomas Flavell for the board and lodging of Flavell's wife, Elizabeth Merritt, in 1846. Flavell denies that Elizabeth Merritt is his wife, but evidence is given that a marriage ceremony was performed in Mangonui in 1842. Elizabeth Merritt was William Butler's mother-in-law.
