Biography

Mary Ann Southee was born in 1835 in Birchington, Kent, ENG.1 She and Samuel Weston were married. She and Richard Clifton were married in 1854. She and Reuben Short were married in 1863 in Wellington, NZ.1 She died on 16 June 1925, at age ~90, in Reikorangi, Kapiti, NZ.2
SDL has aged 8 but PECK has born abt dec 1824

From the EVENING POST - 20 June 1925

DEATH OF AN EARLY SETTLER Mrs Reuben Short, one of the oldest of the early settlers of Port Nicholson, who died on Tuesday last, was born in Kent in 1824. She arrived in Port Nicholson with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John Southee, on the Lady Nugent, in 1841, and with them endured the usual hardships of an infant settlement. In 1848 she married the late Mr. Richard Clifton, who was accidently killed in 1855, leaving one son and two daughters. in 1861 she married the late Mr. Reuben Short, and lived to celebrate their diamond wedding. There are one son and two daughters of the second marriage. Mrs. Short is survived by five of her children, about fifty grandhildren, and a good number of great-grandchildren. She had been, with her late husband, a resident of Palmerston North for a great number of years, although her earlier days were passed in the Hutt. For some little time she had resided with her eldest son, Mr. Samuel Clifton, at Rekiorangi, where she died six months after completing the century. The funeral took place on Friday at Palmerston North

Mary Ann married Richard CLIFTON in 1854. They had two children before Richard died in 1858. Mary Ann had a son with Samuel WESTON in 1860, before she married Reuben SHORT in 1863, with whom she had three children. Mary Ann died at Reikorangi on the Kapiti Coast and was buried in Terrace End Cemetery in Palmerston North with Reuben.
In Mary Ann?s obituary and her death registration, her age is given as 100 years. This does not fit with her birth year of 1835. She may not have known her true age, or it has been inflated at some stage. Some online trees have added to the confusion by saying she was born 17 Dec 1824, as indicated in her obituary. She is definitely not John?s daughter Mary born in 1825, as that Mary died aged three months in 1825 as indicated above. IACL. Mary Ann Southee had person sources.3 She was baptized on 1 June 1835 in Birchington, Kent, ENG.4,5 She immigrated to ENG to NZ on the Lady Nugent arriving NZ 17/3/1841 on 21 October 1840.5
