Charles Darwin was born on 12 February 1809 in Shrewsbury, ENG, age 26 when visited NZ.1,2,3,4,5 He died on 19 April 1882, at age 73, in LON, ENG.
Charles DARWIN visited NZ in december 1835 for a 10 days on the Beagle. Made a donation for the building of the new church in Russell.
Visited Waimate Mission Station. MWS
Early Life
Naturalist Charles Robert Darwin was born on February 12, 1809, in the tiny merchant town of Shrewsbury, England. He was the second youngest of six children. Darwin came from a long line of scientists. His father, Dr. R.W. Darwin, was as a medical doctor, and his grandfather, Dr. Erasmus Darwin, was a renowned botanist. Darwin?s mother, Susanna, died when he was only 8 years old. Darwin was a child of wealth and privilege who loved to explore nature.
In October 1825, at age 16, Darwin enrolled at Edinburgh University along with his brother Erasmus. Two years later, Charles Darwin became a student at Christ's College in Cambridge. His father hoped he would follow in his footsteps and become a medical doctor, but the sight of blood made Darwin queasy. His father suggested he study to become a parson instead, but Darwin was far more inclined to study natural history.
Voyage on the HMS Beagle
While Darwin was at Christ's College, botany professor John Stevens Henslow became his mentor. After Darwin graduated Christ's College with a bachelor of arts degree in 1831, Henslow recommended him for a naturalist?s position aboard the HMS Beagle. The ship, commanded by Captain Robert FitzRoy, was to take a five-year survey trip around the world. The voyage would prove the opportunity of a lifetime for the budding young naturalist.

DEATH OF MR J. KEMP, OF KERIKERI.

"They are getting fewer quickly," so said one of those in the funeral procession of the late Mr. James Kemp, in moving from his late residence to the little churchyard across the road at Kerikeri. The speaker himself had the old missionary blood in him. His remarks applied to the sons and daughters of the band of missionaries who came to New Zealand early in the century. Mr. James Kemp's father belonged to the second company, that landed here in August, 1819. The subject of our notice was born in 1824, and Kerikeri has been his home all his long life. For very many years he kept a store in the big stone building close to the water. In this capacity he is remembered by all who knew him as being, in the words of a settler present, " a true man." Among other things to be set to his credit is the fact that he absolutely refused to have anything to do with the waipiro trade for the Maoris. His public life was mostly confined to his work in connection with the little English church. He was always , happy in welcoming the minister, and for about twenty-one years faithfully discharged the duties of layreader, until about six years ago failing health compelled him to give up the duties, which were taken up by his brother, Mr. W. P. Kemp. In 1854 Mr. Kemp married Sophia Louisa, daughter of the late Rev. Richard Davis, another of the band of missionaries. Mrs. Kemp survives him; as also four sons and four daughters. His death occurred on Tuesday, May 2, and the funeral took place on the Friday following. It was conducted by Canon Walsh. The deceased's favourite hymn, " Nearer My God to Thee," was sung very feelingly, and another favourite piece of his, "Vital Spark," was played on the organ. Notwithstanding the very severe weather, a large muster of friends (pakeha and Maori), from considerable distances, were present to show respect to the deceased. ' ; ' ? James Kemp was baptized on 12 September 1824 in Kerikeri, BOI, NZ.5 He was a storekeeper, Kerikeri, BOI, in 1843.4 He was a farmer in 1858.8

DEATH OF AN OLD COLONIST.
One of the second generation of "old missionaries," Mr. William P. Kemp, died at his residence, Waimate North, on Monday last. He was the third son of Mr. James Kemp, one of the band of missionaries sent.to this country (it was not a, colony then) by the Church Missionary Society in the early part of the last century. 'Hie Rev. Samuel Mursden, on his second visit to New Zealand, in 1819,. brought with him the Rev. I. Butler and Mr. Kemp, and they founded the mission settlement of Kerikeri. Mr. Kemp was bom at Kerikeri in the year 1829, and was therefore nearly 77 years of age at the time of his death. His brothers?Mr. Jas. Kemp, of Kerikeri, and Mr. H. T. Kemp-? as well as his four sisters, had all died before him. Mr. Kemp's long life has been of a quiet and unostentatious diameter, and attracted but little attention from the outside world; but in. his own. neighbourhood and in his own quiet way he did a work that will always keep his memory green. For a time he was clerk of the R.M. Court, and- he was a licensed interpreter up to the time of his death. Strict in keeping to the habits of social and religious life brought to this young country by the fathers frojin the old,* wellordered homes beyond the sea, he was at the same time blessed with a genial temperament that made his company pleasant to all who knew him. When his brother, Mr. Jas. Kemp, died, after the many years of faithful service as lay reader in the little church at Kerikeri, Mr. Wni. Kemp took up the work and continued to go from his home at Waimate to conduct the services on the Sundays when Archdeacon Walsh was not present, his last service being only eighteen days before his death. The funeral look place at the historic churchyard at Waimate North on Wednesday, May 30, and was conducted by the -Iter. J. Kcrelene, in the absence of Archdeacon. Walsh. The service was part in English and part in Maori, and the large number of neighbours present on an extremely wet and boisterous day was a testimony to the respect in which the deceased was held.
