MILI book William & Tiraha: A Biographical Novel by Michael Littlewood (descendant).
"Not much is known about William before his arrival in New Zealand. He was born in about 1790 in Plymouth, Devon , possibly the son of Henry Cook a hotel-keeper in Plymouth and Elizabeth, née Hews (to be confirmed) . William had apparently served in the British navy as a carpenter (once on the HMS Majestic) in the Napoleonic Wars and may have been at the Battle of Trafalgar. A family story suggests that he was also involved at Waterloo in 1815. He may also have been part of the garrison force for Napoleon's imprisonment at the island of St. Helena in the South Atlantic from 1815. Until Napoleon died in 1821, the island was strongly garrisoned while British troops and naval ships apparently circled the island."
