obituary published in the Auckland Star on 17th March 1933:
"OBITUARY.
MR. EDWARD COOK. MAROONED FOR EIGHT MONTHS.
An adventurous life was ended when Mr. Edward Cook died at his home at Waikare, Bay of Islands, recently. He was born at Paihia 85 years ago, and in 1870 shipped as a boat steerer on a colonial whaler named The Japan. The trip was to the Arctic Ocean, and after securing 1000 barrels of oil and about six tons of whalebone, the ship headed for home. One thick misty day The Japan ran on a hard beach and stuck fast. Only some of the crew reached the shore, one of them being Mr. Cook. He walked until he reached a sledge track, which led him to an Eskimo village, where he was kindly treated, being wrapped in furs. The Eskimos set off along the sledge track and found the other members of the crew. Some were already dead, but others were saved by the assistance of the natives. For eight months the men were marooned, but Mr. Cook, with the assistance of some Eskimos, reached a trading post 100 miles to the south and returned to his mates laden with supplies. The year after the wreck, the crew of The Japan were rescued by American whaling vessels. Mr. Cook went on board the Henry Tabor and served until the end of the season. Afterwards he returned to Now Zealand, where he continued his whaling work for many years, and also did some boat building. Mr. Cook is survived by his wife and the following children: -Mrs. H. Ingersoll, of Garfield Street, Parnell; Mrs. G. H. Cook, of St. Stephen's Avenue, Parnell; Mrs. N. Reti, Mrs. T. Rcti, Mr. Edward Cook and Mr. William Cook, of Waikare."
