OBITUARY.
United Press Association?By Electric Telegraph Wellington, Aug. 17 Mr C. .1. Pharazyn, a centenarian, died last night. He landed in Wellington in 1841, and has lived here practically ever since. He held a seat in the Legislative Council from 1869 to 1885, when his eon succeeded him. He celebrated his hundredth birthday in October last.
(The late Mr Pharazyn was identified in many? t fv,'iys with the progress of Wellington. As a member of the Harbour Board in his younger days, he left a record of advice, it was found hard to equal. He was a large shareholder in the Manawatu Baiiway Company, and held an extensive estate in the Manawatu district. The deceased gentleman held very strong convictions, and some years ago was mulcted in a fine of .£IOO sooner than waive his opinion on a peculiar legal point. His eldest son was drowned in the Thames (England) a few months ago.)

Pharazyn, Charles Johnston, 1802-1903
Businessman. Born London, arrived Wellington 1841 on `Jane' with his wife and three children. After a period as a sheepfarmer at Palliser Bay he entered into a partnership with merchant John Johnston, and subsequently joined Levin senior. In 1869 he was called to the Legislative Council, a position he held till Mar 1885, and his son Robert (1833-1896) was appointed in his stead. Married three times; first in 1825, in London, to Harriet Maria; secondly, in 1832, in London, to Mary Catherine Buckland (died 1864 aged 55); and thirdly, on 24 Dec 1867, at St Paul's Church, Wellington, to Jessica Rankin (1818-1891), and English poetess who had come to New Zealand earlier that year. He died at Seacroft, Hobson Street, Wellington, on 16 Aug 1903 aged 100 years. See also Encyclopedia of New Zealand edited by McLintock Vol 2, page 765.
