John was born in Wellington 20 October 1845. His mother was Isabella FRASER born 16 May 1825 at Fort Augustus, Inverness, Scotland. Although most sources have his father as James Hopkins Stevens, this is apparently not the case. John was born as John BELL some two years before Isabella married James, which was 20 July 1847. He along with another child born to Isabella prior to her marriage, took the name Stevens later on.
James was 42 when he died on 14 August 1860 at Parewanui, Rangitikei, so was born 1818. Family story have his birthplace as Bath, Somerset.
James will states that after payment of debts and funeral and testamentary expenses his estate is to be used for "the support and maintenance of my wife, together with the education and maintenance of my children Robert, Isabella, Amelia, Duncan, Alexander and James, as likewise of two natural children begotten of my said wife named Eliza Pain and John Bell."
John's first wife was his cousin Margaret Campion. They married 28 Nov 1870. His second wife was Annie McMaster. They were married 17 March 1880 in Wellington. IACL
James Hopkins Stevens was a boatman in Wellington and they were at Pipitea. There was a James Stevens who had the Queens Head Inn at the top of Molesworth Street, but am not sure they were the same person. The reason I am interested in that one is because the Queen's Head was taken over in about 1854 by Thomas Henry Clapham, my 2x great grandfather.IACL. James Hopkins Stevens was a boatman, Pipitea, Wellington from 1848 to 1850.2,3
