David (Captain) Kell was born in 1811.1 He and Ann Hare were married in 1844 in Old St Pauls Church, Auckland, 2nd couple married in church.2,3 He died on 25 April 1887, at age ~76, 76 years of age.1,2

DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER.
Another old identity has passed away after an illness of only twelve hours, in the person of Captain David Kcll, 7b' years of age, who has only survived his wife four months. They leave a family of two sous and three daughters, all grown np. Their eldest son was drowned in the s.s. Tauranga, and other four sons have been taken to their long rest at different times. Captain Kell's father r.-as a captain in the East Indian Company's service, who brought his son up to the same profession. He was the first white boy who lauded at Owhyee, where Captain Cook was murdered, and he dined with tho king or chief of that; island. He came to New Zealand in 1539 with Capt. Symonds and Captain He.ile, ou behalf of an English company, to work the copper mines at the rvawan, and was afterwards connected with the shipping business at this port. He was at the Bay of Islands at the time of Honi Heke's war. ilia wife was an eye-witness to the Maoris cutting down the flagstaff at that time. Captain Sell was the second person married in Old St. Paul's Church. He was for 44 years an Oddfellow in the Fountain of Friendship Lodge of the Manchester Union. He was a principal witness in a civil case, the first tiied in the old Supreme Courthouse, in Queen street, the site now occupied by the City Hall and other buildings. He was unobstrusive, and of a retiring dispoaitiou, and very much respected by all who knew him. He has one married slater, upwards of SO years of age, living at Timaru, to whom he wrote the same afternoon he was taken ill. His funeral will leave his late residence to-day at eleven o'clock for Waikomit!. David (Captain) Kell immigrated to to Russell in 1839.1
