Biography

Henry Stilling was born about 1805.1 He and Elizabeth were married. He died in 1887, at age ~82, in Hutt Valley, Wellington.1

Death of Mr. and Mrs. Stilling.
Within the past 48 hour two of the few remaining pioneer settlers of this province whos arrival dates back to the '40's have passed away, namely, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Stilling, of the Lower Hutt. The deceased couple, who only snrvived each other a few hours, arrived in Wellington in 1845, and soon afterwards settled at the Lower Hutt, where they have since resided. Even more than the ordinary share of the trials and vicissitudes that usually befall early arrivals fell to tho lot of Mr. and Mrs. Stilling. They had not long settled in their new home at the Hutt, which at that time was a rough native clearing, when one of Mrs. Stilling's sons, by her first husband (Mr. Raynor) was drowned while crossing the Hutt river, his brother, whose tragic end many years afterwards caused such a sensation in Wellington, and who was also in the canoe at the time, escaping, albeit to meet his death in a still more cruel manner. Many of the older residents in the province will remember the murder of Mr. Raynor in the Ranqitikei district, and the arrest, trial, conviction, and release of the supposed murderer, for whom a reprieve was from time to time granted, on account of the doubt that existed in the minds of many persons as to his actual guilt. After spending some two or three years in prison, Tricker, the supposed murderer, was finally released, and the real murderer has ever since remained undiscovered. These heavy trials, however, did not crush the indomitable couple, and for many years they retained their full energies, making their home one of the prettiest in the valley, and securing besides a tolerable competency. Mrs. Raynor, the wife of Mrs. Stilling's murdered son, her daughters, and other members of the family were present whon the old lady and gentleman died ; Mr. Stilling's death occuring on Sunday evening, about 8 o'clook, and Mrs. Stilling lost evening, at 5. Perhaps no settlers in tho district had a larger circle of friends than the deceased, and the news of their demise will be received with general regret. Henry Stilling immigrated to ENG to Wellington in 1845.1

RAYNOR RAYNER

PPA Daily Southern Cross, Volume XIX, Issue 1926, 18 September 1863, Page 3
The most important item of information winch T have to communicate to you by this opportunity is the horrible murder in the Rangitikei district of a settler named Robert Raynor. Although at the time of my writing the report of the inquest has not reached town, I w ill briefly recapitulate as far as I can the ciicumstances of tlia case as furnished by letters by the overland mail of Saturday lait, and by a gentleman who arrived here on Monday. Mr. Rayner was a farmer of consideiable influence, residing in the more populous portion of the Rangitiktii distiict. He was married, but at the time the dreadful deed was perpetrated, his wife and family were ou a visit to some relations in Wellington. On the evening of the 27th ultimo, the unfortunate deceased went to the post-oftice in the Rangitikei district for the pnipose of fonvaiding letters to town, and likewise to transact other business. lie left the house about midnight for the purpose of returning home, a distance of three-quaiteis of a mile. Nothing appears to have been heard of the deceased until the Ist instant, when a gentleman who resided in the neighbourhood went to the house of the unfortunate man, and. finding the place locked up, got through a window and entered the home. No peison wat in the place, and there was no apparent evidence of a robbery having been committed. A revolver lay on the floor of the house, and some bedding had the appearance of having been tossed about. No intelligence being obtainable as to Rayner's whereabouts, an alarm was raised, and a search was instituted in the neighbourhood. On the morning of the 'Sid instant, the remains of the unfortunate deceased weie discovered within a fow yard sof his own premises, with the feet protruding from the ground oi though the body had been hastily consigned to the giound, and the place was overlaid with split slabs of timber a? though it had been the intention of the miscieant who perpetiated the deed to pievent the distuibed state of the earth being easily recognised. The body was dreadfully mutilated, and had unmistakeable signs of having been dragged along the giound for a considerable distance. Search was at once made in the vicinity of the place for evidence, by which the muuleier or murdereis could be traced, and in an outhouse was found two spades covered with blood and human Imir. 'From subsequent investigation there is little doubt but that the deceased was shot by his own revolver, inasmuch as there were thieo woundi by pistol shots, and the weapon mentioned was found in the house, bearing evidence of having been recently discharged. One of the shots appeals to have gone clear through the centre of the heart, and another through the crown of the head, and upper part of the throat ; but besides thii the body had tiaces of having been chopped and cut about m a most hoiiible manner. The particulars of the inquest, which took place on Thursday last, have not yet reached town, but aic hourly cxpucted. Robert Stillingfeet Raynor immigrated to ENG to Hutt Valley, Wellington, in 1845.
