Stewart McMullen was most likely born in Muckamore Northern Ireland in 1802 ( Source: NAA : WO 25/316 3 Foot 2 Battn)
He trained as a Millwright but on 26 Jun 1820 joined the 3rd Regiment of Foot at Newry Ireland. ( Source: NAA : WO 25/316 3 Foot 2 Battn)
He came out to Australia in 1822 as a Convict guard on either the Eliza II or Surry (Source: MHNSW-StAC: NRS 1273; Reel: 2552) There is conflicting opinion amongst relatives as to which boat? I say Surry because I have some evidence another cousin says Eliza II and has widely published this but cannot produce where she got that information from.
After discharge in July 1827 he worked again as Millwright in NSW and Tasmania.
In 1833 he responded to an advertisement by the Church Missionary Society for tenders to build a mill in NZ .(Source: Classified Advertising (1833, May 16). The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser (NSW : 1803 - 1842), p. 3. Retrieved 20 May 2017, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article2212044)
Stewart won the tender (Source: Record of the Church Missionary Society. Minutes of Australasia Correspondence Committee 29 May 1833 http://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-2666886331 Accessed 16 December 2024)
The local paper then got the wrong name on the shipping list when they embarked on the Nereus the correct name was written in the Missionary diaries. (Source: "SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE." The Sydney Herald (NSW : 1831 - 1842) 29 July1833: 2. Web. 20 May 2017 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article12847361.)
Stewart went on to build the mill at Te Waimate ( later called Bedgood Flour Mill) though this may be a rebuild of Stewarts mill as I have some maps that have Stewarts mill in a different location.
There are many references in the CMC diaries about what Stewart got up to whilst building the mill.
Charles Darwin mentioned his mill during his visit.
Stewart then went on to build at least 5 other Water Powered Flour mills for different missions and for the Maori.
He also built a water powered saw mill for Ranulf Dacre and Gordon Davis Brown at Mercury Bay.
On 28 August 1837 whilst back in Sydney Australia he married Ann Brouster (NSW BDM 1837/1402)
They had one child William born 11 July 1838 (NSW BDM 1838 151 Vol 22)
Stewart went back to NZ and in 1846 Ann remarried.
During his life he spent a small amount of time in custody in both Sydney and Auckland ( eg Archives of NZ ; Record 1851/1461 Item ID R23521188)
15 May 1852 there was an admission request by a friend for Stewart to go be admitted to Auckland Hospital ( Archives NZ ; ACGO 8333 IA1/104, 1852/1006)
He died there on 16 May from Apoplexy (NZ BDM 1848/1116 and 1848/3353)
He died intestate as you found
In early 1852 he had just started to build a Flour Mill at Tauranga for Archdeacon Brown
