From WIKI
(5) Born 1802 (or 1800, see following) in London. I have entered this Charles?s birth on geni and on Wikitree as goodwillie-170. It is the predominant view on Ancestry and the view with the most likely-sounding story. A Charles Goodwillie was born on 18 August 1802 and baptised at St James Piccadilly on 23 August 1802, son of James Goodwillie and Catherine Henry. A seaman called Charles Goodwillie, born 1800 in London, arrived in Australia 1831, is jailed in Sydney on 10 Apr. 1833, a free man at the time of admittance, and is released on bail two days later (New South Wales, Australia, Gaol Description and Entrance Books). Given vagueness about age, this could well be the same man. That a seaman known to be in the Australasian area should arrive in a whaling settlement in New Zealand is credible. rimu39 on ancestry.co.uk says that the bail was organised by Johnny Jones to get crew for the ?Sydney Packet?. In 1835 Johnny Jones (see above) bought a ship called the ?Sydney Packet? captained by James Joss and converted her into a whaler (https://myancestorsstory.com/sydney-packet.html). Around this time Johnny Jones acquired a controlling interest in most southern New Zealand whaling stations (Dictionary of New Zealand Biography). According to rimu39 on ancestry.co.uk, Charles?s marriage took place at the house of James Joss. Although there is a discrepancy in the dates, this gives a credible sequence of events. Charles Goodwillie immigrated to to Southland in 1838.3
