Thomas (de) Berry
M, #17852, b. about 1790
Biography
Thomas (de) Berry was born about 1790.
1 He and
Sarah Palmer were married.
Thomas Berry (buried as de Berry) was my 3rd great grandfather. He is also Fredrick Thomas?s and Thomas Richard?s father. Frederick and Thomas junior worked for the NZ Company ? sailing from London to Wellington and then onto Nelson in the late 1830s (before the first migrant ships arrived). They later brought their families to Nelson and their father Thomas followed as did most of Thomas senior?s children (he was married three times and had 18 children).
There is a very large book published by a family member in 1993 on the approx. 6,000 descendents of Thomas Berry (de Berry) published by Evagean Publishing (see their web site). This includes copies of the letters between early family members (now held by the Nelson museum) about Thomas? senior?s possible link with the French royal family. This was never proven and my theory is that Thomas senior was trying to provide his family with social standing in a new colony.

FIRST WHITE PERSON BORN IN WELLINGTON.
Mr James Brown, an old resident of the Hutt Valley, has forwarded to the Hutt County Council a photograph of Mr F. lingers, who, it is claimed, was the first 'White person born- in Wellington. In a covering letter Mr Brown gives some reminiscences of the early colonisation of Wellington; he remarks: ?Mr Hogers was the first European child bora in the province of Wellington ; being born on the 29th day of February. 18411, at Petone, where he lived for the first six years of his lue. He then lived at the Hutt for the next six years, when he went to the Taita, where he resided - for twenty-five years. Mr Hogers received a Crown grant of fifty acres of land at Whiteman?s Valley from the New Zealand Government. His father was drowned in July, 1840, with nine others, near Petone, while attempting to cross the harbour, the boat being capsized in a gale. At the time of his father?s death, Mr Hogers was only six months old 1 . The town of Petone at that time consisted of two small shops and one hotel, the latter being kept by aMr Allen. Wellington at that time was non existent. Mr Hogers has seen the town of Petone and city of Wellington grow from an open manuka scrub and toi-toi beach to their present state. He distinctly remembers the Maori war, in 1846, he being then between six and seven years of age. Ho was hidden, in a wooden chimney, with stones packed all round him as a protection against the bullets of the Maoris, that were coming. in all directions. The place was situated on' the tox> of the hill at tlio back of the present Lower Hutt railway station. ~, "If was during tins war that the Boy Bugler? . (Allen by name) '. was tomahawked while sounding the alarm, to the soldiers in the camp, who were all asleep, and in giving the alarm his arm_ holding the bugle was chopped oft. Ho immediately seized the. bugle with the other hand and blew a second warning just vu time before his left-hand was cut oft. Mr Rogers has a vivid recollection of the earthquakes of 1847 that Πwore very severe, hut those of 1855 wore the heaviest experienced in the Dominion un to date, causing the sea to come over into the shops on the Wellington beach; and the Wellington road (present Hutt road), was completely blocked with slips. An. old condemned ship, "called the Noah?s Ark, which was surrounded by water before the shake, was left high and dry; all buildings and bridges were badly damaged; and Mr Rogers considers that a shake of a like nature would practically ruin Wellington to-day- The first two sawmills were erected by Mr Hart Udy and Mr Petre in the Hutt Valley in 1850.?.
Mr Rogere went to Palmoreton North, via Foxton, along the coast, in 1873, purchasing his present property on the Bangitikei line at *£2 per acre, on which property he still, resides; he did not make his home there, however, until 1877. ' Mr Rogers's parents arrived in New Zealand in the ship Oriental, which was the first vessel to anchor in Oriental Bay. It was from this circumstance that the bay derived its name. Mr Rogers is still enjoying good health, and lives with his wife at, Palmerston North.

Biography
I have a large amount of information on the Morgan family - they arrived in Nelson in 1842 and later that year they went to Massacre Bay, I presume as part of mining
Another family they later married into was William Reeve, who came as a whaler in 1838 and was shipwrecked on the Chatham Islands. After some time there he returned to Wellington and settled at Johnsonville. His son married a Morgan descendant.
The Aldridge family from Port Underwood are also intertwined at several stages and I have a large amount on them if you are collecting that!
Keeps one busy - and fascinated with our history!! Cheers, margaret MN. William Reeve immigrated to to NZ on a whaler in 1838.
