William Swallow

William Swallow was born about 1790.1 He died in Tasmania, AUS.1
A southern mutiny
Southland?s first mutiny occurred when 19 convicts aboard the Cyprus took over their ship in Tasmania, marooned fellow convicts and crew and sailed to Dusky Sound in September 1829.
They plundered stores, sealskins and oil from Fiordland stations, then sailed to Chatham Island, Tonga and Japan.
The leader of the mutiny was Ferguson but the only one with sailing experience was William Swallow whom they elected sailing master.
The Cyprus was the first Australian vessel to visit Japan, where they arrived short of food and water.
They were turned away and sailed for China where the Cyprus was scuttled and Swallow and three companions worked their passage back to England.
On arrival they were captured again and two mutineers hanged in December 1830 ? the last men to be executed for piracy in Britain.
William Swallow dodged the gallows as he claimed that as the only experienced sailor, he had been compelled to stay aboard and navigate the ship.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment and returned to Tasmania where he died a few years later.
