James (Dr) Allison was born in 1816 in Letham, Strathaven, SCT.1 He and Georgiana Gilfillan were married on 30 March 1844 in Wanganui Rev TAYLOR age 16.2,3,1 He died in 1867, at age ~51, in at sea in the Atlantic yellow fever.1
1848 took family to Nelson where he had purchased a large landholding but still farmed in Wanganui and returned there permanently in 1855 MAWH. James (Dr) Allison was a farmer Wanganui and Wairau, Nelson from 1841 to 1867.1

Another old colonist, Mr Patrick Donovan, has passed away at his late residence, Onehunga, at the ripe age of 86 years. Mr Donovan arrived at the. Bay of Islands in 1838, and came to Auckland in 1840. He was a member of the Provincial Council, and took an active part in politics. Owing to having met with an accident he retired from public life some years ago. Mr Donovan leaves a grown up family. The funeral took place this afternoon, leaving the late residence of the deceased at 3 p.m. for the Catholic Cemetery.

The essay is the story of Patrick Donovan, an Irishman who came to Auckland in 1840 with his first wife, Julia McAuliffe and their children. They first went to Hobart and then Melbourne before arriving in New Zealand. He established himself in business in Auckland as innkeeper of the Shamrock, Rose and Thistle, Shortland Crescent, and later farmed at Onehunga. He was the owner of land in various parts of Auckland. In 1853 he was elected to the Auckland Provincial Council, serving till 1855. Julia died in 1845 and he remarried Elizabeth Scott in the same year. The essay includes brief notes on his 16 children, and covers the years 1835-1899. Patrick Donovan immigrated to to BOI and to Auckland 1840 in 1838.6,1 He was a storekeeper, innkeeper Shortland cresc., Auckland in 1845.3
