Fatal Accident.?We regret to state, that on Tuesday night, John Smith, the well known drover whilst proceeding on his way to Mr. Gillies?s station, was unfortunately drowned in the Pakaratahi River. The stream, which a a day or two previously was fordable, owing to the late rains, had become much swollen. The deceased left Hodder's about eleven o?clock on Tuesday night, being the last time he was seen alive, and early on Wednesday mornin" his horse and dog were observed on either bank of tho river gazing wistfully into it. Search was immediately instituted, and the body was discovered about five hundred yards lower down hanging over a snag. Mr. Kempton, junr., immediately rode into town to give information of tho accident. An inquest, was held on the body on Thursday, at Hodder?s, before Richard Barton, Esq.,J.P., (who acted as Coroner on the occasion), and a respectable Jury. After a patient investigation into the circumstances with the fate of the deceased, the Jury were unanimously of opinion that John Smith, accidently met his death while crossing the Pakaratahi river, which was much swollen at the time by the previous heavy rains. John Smith immigrated to ENG to NZ on the Lady Nugent arriving NZ 17/3/1841 in 1840.2,4 He was a drover in 1860.3
