About Luxford, William
IMMIGRANT TO NZ AGED 39

Hellingly village, like many others on the Weald, was involved in the Wealden iron industry. The watermill connected with the industry is no longer in operation. Horselunges Manor is a moated Tudor manor house, restored by Walter Godfrey in the 1930s.

William's occupation varied from that of a butcher [1825-1826], to a labourer [1827], to a corn chandler [1829-1830], and finally back to being a butcher [1832-1836], and specifically a pork butcher in 1839

He married Elizabeth when he was 27 and she was about the same
The witnesses to the marriage were William's sister, Jane Habgood Luxford and his brother-in-law, Charles Hunt. William and Elizabeth had at least seven children: William Nicholas Luxford, born 24 March 1825; George Henry Luxford, born 25 April 1826; Fanny Sarah Luxford, born 10 December 1827; Anna Maria Luxford, born 01 April 1829; Elizabeth Habgood Luxford, born 22 July 1831; Charles Edward Luxford, born 11 July 1833; and Jabez Thomas Luxford, born 12 August 1837.

William emigrated to New Zealand on the ADELAIDE which left London on the 18th September 1839 and arrived in Port Nicholson (now Wellington) on the 7th March 1840.
With him was his wife Elizabeth Jasper (nee Nichols) and his children
William Nicholas aged 15
George Henry aged 14
Charles Edward aged 13
Fanny Sarah aged 11
Elizabeth Habgood aged 9
Jabez Thomas aged 5

The family originally came from town of Eastbourne, Sussex, England. They settled in Wellington where they became butchers and merchants and eventually run-holders in the Wairarapa and Manawatu.
Nearly all Luxfords in New Zealand are descended from this original immigrant family.
William Luxford owned Berhampore Farm in Wellington, where he died in 1870. He was buried in the Bolton Street Cemetery. Elizabeth died 3 years later, in 1873, and was buried with William.
