Martha LEWIS, born Martha Masters on 11 Dec 1801 in Willoughby, Warwickshire, married Ebenezer GRIMM, who was convicted of theft and sent to Tasmania in 1833. She then married David LEWIS in 1839, and they emigrated to Wellington on the "Oriental" with her 15-year-old daughter Mary Ann Grimm, under the patronage of George Duppa. David Lewis became the Lands Clerk of the New Zealand Company. He and Martha lived on Lewisville Terrace in Thorndon, off Tinakori Road. Her extraordinary story has been told in a novel, "Lewisville", by a descendant, Alexandra Tidswell. Martha Masters immigrated to ENG to NZ on the Oriental arriving NZ 31/1/1840 on 15 September 1839.^3,1
