Oldest white settlement
At the end of last month members of the Banks Peninsula branch of Federated Farmers and their invited guests travelled down the long and winding hili road into Peraki, which is 11 miles from Little River. the road is still impressive enough to those who do not know this part of the country well, but Mr W. S. Hall, who farms the 4500 acres property, says that it is nothing today compared with even the goat track that existed when his father, Commander S. Hall, acquired the property in 1927. His father had an old three-seater Willys Knight in the early days equipped with three spare wheels, and Mr Hall says that they were lucky if they did not have to use them all on a trip to Christchurch. Peraki has the distinction of having been inhabited by white men for longer than any other place in Canterbury. Mr Hall said that as far as Europeans were concerned the history of Peraki started on St Patricks Day in 1835 when Captain Hempleman, a Danish whaling skipper, sailed the brig Bee into the bay and began to establish a whaling station there. He was joined by his wife in 1837 but she apparently did not like it there and died soon after and was buried on the property along with several members of Hempieman's crew who were drowned while chasing whales. Mr Hall said that Peraki bad been used as a base for several whaling vessels for a number of years b t the waters were overfished and the whales virtually ran out in the early 1840 s when Hempieman?s whaling gear and rights were sold by Court order. Hempieman claimed to have bought about half of Banks Peninsula from the Maoris for two whaleboats, but the Government would not recognise his title to such a large area. However, he continued to seek recognition of what he believed to be his rights until he died in 1880. Mr Hall said that Hempieman must have been quite a tough customer. His favourite punishment for troublesome Maoris was to lock them in an oil barrel for up to two weeks and feed them through the bung.
