The first Pakeha owners at Waiaua were Philip and Charlotte King, Philip being the oldest son of John and Hannah King, the CMS missionaries of Hohi / Rangihoua. Philip was himself for some time a catechist at Hohi and Te Puna, before purchasing this land at Waiaua in 1836. There is a long history of farming at Tepene, as well as the mining of china clay for the ceramics industry, and most recently the development of an international golfing resort, Kauri Cliffs. He immigrated to arrived Rangihoua, Bay of Islands on the Active., on 19 November 1814.
