Obituary
EARLY PIONEER'S DEATH.
MR. ARCHIBALD McNAIR. 79 YEARS A COLONIST. One of the oldest identities of Auckland passed away at Dairy Flat on Friday in the person of Mr. Archibald McNair." He was in his 84th year, and lived in the Auckland district for 79 years. /He was born in Paisley, Scotland, and at the age of four was brought by his parents to Auckland in the ship the Duchess of Argyle, arriving in October, 1842. It :s the arrival of this ship and of the Jan± Giffbrd which is celebrated at the earlv settlers' gathering each year. Mr. McNair'3 parents took up land in what is now the suburb of Bichmond, and engaged in dairy farming. Hard work came early m life m those days, and at the age of 14 Mr. McNairwas working with his father in a saw pit on Mill Creek. In ear'.y manhood rj£ took up land in Richmond, Œand later at Dairy Flat, where one of his sons still resides. He served in the Maori war in the Auckland militia, being sent to the Drury district when the Maoris threatened. At the age of 30 Mr. McNair married Miss Weideson, and they had a family of four sons. His wife died "six years ago. The four sons are Messrs. J. H. McNair, of Heme Bay, J. McNair. of Biverhead, A McNair, of Northcote, and W. McNair, of Dairy Flat.
