Our James Reed was the whaler who lived with with his "Maori" wife, Ekaumoenga, on Sunday Island, in the Kermadecs.
One of your queries concerned Sarah Reed. She was James and Ekaumoenga's 3rd daughter - full name Sarah Kaohi Reed, born 19 April 1839 on Sunday Island. She married Judge Spencer William Von Sturmer 3 July 1860 in Auckland. Her brother John was married to Ngahiraka.

James Reed and his family settled in Northcote in early 1845, after escaping a major volcanic eruption on Sunday Island. They had first tried to land at Russell (March 1845 - Kororareka, as it was known in those days) but were unable to do so as the town was still 'smoking' after being sacked by Hone Heke and his Ngapuhi. Lyn CHAPPELL LC. James (READ) (REID) Reed was a settled in Kermadecs with Maori wife. in 1836.1,2
