member of the missionary community, claimed, through his agent
William Puckey, a 1,000 acres Mangatete block. Davis, however,
believed this block contained 4,000-5,000 acres. Maori did
not dispute his claim. Taua, the sole seller, and Henare
Popota, a witness to the sale, confirmed his right to sell the

Mrs. Sophia Louisa Kemp, a very old resident of the Hay of Islands, died at Keri Keri recently, at the age of 85 years. She was a daughter of one of the early missionaries at the Bay of Is. lands, the Rev. Richard Davis, who arrived there as far back as 1824. Deceased was married to the late James Kemp, and is survived by four sons and three daughters. A sister of Mrs. Kemp married Mr. E. M. Williams, and deceased therefore was an aunt of Mr. Norman Williams, manager at Auckland of the National Insurance Company. Sophia Louisa Davis was baptized on 11 April 1830 in Paihia, BOI, NZ.
