The death recently of Mrs. Catherine Sophia Simpson at Taumarere removed one of the earliest-born Europeans of the Bay of Islands. Mrs. Simpson was born at Russell in 1844, her grandfather being one of those who arrived from Australia with the Rev. Samuel Marsden. Her aunt, Mrs. Letheridge, was one of the first white children born in New Zealand. Mrs. Simpson was a Miss Flowerday, and was married to Mr. J. Carroll at Russell in 1863. He died seven years later, leaving his widow with three sons and one daughter. Her second marriage was with Mr. Franklin Simpson, whose death occurred 15 years ago. By the second marriage there were three sons and two daughters. For the past rwo years Mrs. Simpson lived at Pakaru, Taumarere. She is survived by her brother, Mr George Flowerday, of Russell, and the following children:?Messrs. Charles and Henry Carroll, of Frankton; James Carroll, of Napier; Mrs. F. Hunter, of Kawakawa; Messrs. George Simpson, of Opua; John Simpson, of Onehunga; and William Simpson, of Omana; Mrs. McClure, of Auckland; and Mrs. Wilkinson, of Pakaru. There are 32 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

MR. A. J. LEWIS DEATH AT 92 YEARS (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. Tha death occurred in the Wairoa HospitaL yesterday ot Mr Archibald James Lewis, one of the districts oldest and most highly respected residents. He was 92 years of age. Mr Lewis was the son of one of the earliest pioneers who settledin this district. He was born in Wairoa and lived the whole of his lifetime in the district. Possessing a quiet, retiring nature. Mr. Lewis had many friends, both among the Europeans and Maoris. His mother was a Maori, He lived for many years in K.opu road, near the Heads, and subsequently took up residence at Ruataniwha. Besides a widow, Mr. Lewis leaves a family of four sons and three daughters. Mr. Claude Lewis, Wairoa; Mr. George Lewis, Mohaka, Mr. Abel Lewis, Raupunga, Mr. Rudolph (Lofty) Lewis, Wairoa, Mrs. T. Corliss, Hastings, Mrs. A. Davies, Wairoa, and Mrs. M. Edwards, Turiroa.
