Esther Cooper was born in 1826 in Co. Wicklow, IRL.¹ She and Samuel Jackson were married. She died in 1887, at age ~61, in One Tree Point, Invercargill, NZ.¹

Sailed from Melbourne to NZ with Caleb Cull in Dec 1854 / Jan 1855.

Esther Cooper was 5 ft tall, Irish, reputably shrewd but always signed her name with a cross. At the time of her death she was claiming she was 66 which gave a birth year of 1821 but when first married in 1844 she said she was 18 which was probably more correct giving a birth year of 1826. Her parents were listed on her Death Certicates as John Cooper and Mary Butler but when first married she did not give her mothers name. She moved to Bradford where she worked as a weaver and married Benjamin Nightingale, reputedly related to Florence, but after the birth of Esther, Benjamin disappeared and the 3 year old Esther was listed as living with her Grandparents in the 1851 census.

The whereabouts of Esther Cooper are unknown until 1852 when she gave birth to Sara Jane in Hobart where she called herself Esther Collins. There is no record of a marriage to Thomas Collins nor any record of what happened to him to enable her to marry Caleb Cull in 1853.

Emma was born in Bendigo then the family moved to Wellington in late 1854. Caleb adopted Sara Jane Collins and although previously unaware of Esther Nightingale's presence adopted her also when her Grandparents brought her to NZ. In Wellington the Culls operated The Cheltenham Boarding House in 1855, The Temperance Hotel in 1863, The Freemasons tavern in 1865 and a lodging house in Molesworth St in 1868.

Sarah Jane was brought up by the well to do Braithwaite family in Dunedin who were apparently Uncle and Aunt of Thomas Collins. Esther left Caleb and also moved to Dunedin with the grown up girls where she married Samuel Jackson while claiming to be a widow even though she later died before Caleb Cull.

Her Death Certificate lists the cause of death as heart disease,dropsy and exhaustion.

Samuel Jackson was born in 1832 in LANCS, ENG.¹ He and Esther Cooper were married. He died on 21 April 1894, at age ~62, in Invercargill, NZ.¹

James Alexander was born on 20 July 1818 in Dun, Angus, SCT.¹ He and Mary Cowie were married in Logie Pert, Forfar, SCT.² He and Ann Hair were married on 11 October 1849 in Wanganui, NZ.² He died on 14 July 1895, at age 76, in Wellington, NZ.¹

James continued in business in Wanganui speculating in land, stock and operating a butchery for a time. In 1861 he went into business with his future brother-in-law and fellow Scotsman, David PEAT. The firm had contracts to supply to the military forces based in Wanganui until the withdrawal of the garrison in 1870.
On the 11 October 1849 James married Ann HAIR in Wanganui. She was daughter of William Cockburn and Jane (Jean) Hair née SCOTT who also settled in Wanganui in the early 1840s. James Alexander immigrated to LON to Wellington on the Martha Ridgway arriving 14 nov 1840 on 5 July 1840.²
