Newspapers were keen to print a list of some of her "?handsome bequests to public institutions in Wanganui. The chief items are: -£12,000 for the Museum and Library, £4000 for the Wanganui Orphanage, £2500 for the Hospital, £2000 for the Education Board for the purpose of establishing technical college scholarships, £1500 for the Presbyterian Home Mission, £1000 for the founding of scholarships at the Girls' College. The total of these bequests is £24,900 (approx. $3,762,645 in 2024)". The balance of the estate was left to relatives.
The £12,000 ($1,813,323) was to establish in Wanganui a public library and museum in memory of and to perpetuate the name of 'my said father', to be called the Alexander Library and Museum was to be built on Queen's Park (Pukenamu). After 16 years of planning the long-awaited second library building was opened on 28 June 1933. Its art deco style was acclaimed as 'a building worthy of the fifth City of the Dominion' and light and airy ? (and) modelled on earthquake resisting lines. It was fitted with electric lighting gas heating and had rimu fittings and furniture throughout. The library boasted a separate reference room, children's library (with separate entrance), reading room and a 'subscriber's lounge'. It was opened by Miss Marjorie Low, a relative.
The building was used as the Wanganui library until a new lending library was built on the site of the Queen's Park School in 1983. The Alexander library, now known as the Alexander Heritage & Research Library Te Rerenga mai o te K?uru houses a comprehensive Whanganui history collection including a quantity of unique, irreplaceable documents and photographs, together with a store of associated knowledge, information and reference materials compiled over the years.
