Wellington, May 6. The death is announced of Councilor James Petherick, aged 61. He arrived in Wellington in 1810, and always took a great interest in munioipal matters. He waa also conneoted with several charitable aid bodies.

JAMES PETHERICK. We regret to announce the death of Councillor J. Petherick, who died at his residence. Upper Willis street, at a quarter to 3 yesterday afternoon. The deceased was born in London in 1834,and arrived in Wellington in 1840 with his father and step-mother, his brothers, J. A. Petherick, now in Wanganui, and Edwin, who is in Melbourne, and his sister, now- Mrs Burgess, of Johusonville. Having learned tho trade of carpentering he went to Australia in 1 and seven years later returned to Otago, removing aftowards to 'Timaru, where ho worked at his trade. In 18(13 he returned to this city, and made bis homo here. Except for a short visit to Australia for tho benefit of his health, he has resided here ever since. For many years he worked as a carpenter and builder, and is well remembered by many old residents. lie took a great interest in municipal matters, and in 1885 ho contested the election for To Aro Ward, and was returned as its member. With tho exception of one (year he has retained his seat in tho Council over since. At tho time of his death ho was tho oldest member of that body, and might well bo culled tho ? Father of tho Council.? In ISSIi tho ratepayers elected him as one of their representatives on tho Harbour Board, and as showing their appreciation of his services, and the confidence they had in him, Thoy have reelected him at every election since. He was a useful and attentive member of both the Harbour Board and tho City Council. Ho was also connected with several of the charitable aid bodies, with tho Oddfellows and the Widow and Orphans' Fund. Through failing health ho was unable, to attend regularly to his public duties ? for some time. Some years ago his father died, and in 18UU his wife, formerly Miss Mary Sim, of Jolmsonvillo, whom he had married at Duuedm iu 1802, died. There were no children. Tho deceased had snfl'orod from asthma for tho past 20 years, but tho principal cause of death was Bright?s disease and dropsy-. He was compelled to take to his bed somo time ago, and although everything possible in the way of medical attention and careful nursing was done, ho gradually sank, . and yesterday afternoon ho peacefully passed away in the presence of his brother Frederick and his sister, Mrs Burgess. Ho bore his sufferings patiently, and was quite conscious to the last. Hr Euwson attended him during his last illness, and ho also received tho most careful attention from Mr and Mrs Kelly, who had kept house for him for somo time. The deceased had many good qualities, and tho news of his death will bo received by many with a sincere feeling of regret. Both in business and in tho many public* positions lie had filled he was thoroughly upright. Mr J. A. Petherick, his brother, of Wanganui, has "been telegraphed for. The deceased's half-brother is Mr E. AV. Petherick, and Mrs F. Sidey is his half-sister. Tho funeral is to take place to-morrow afternoon. James Petherick had person sources.
