Mrs Sophia Whitehead, who died at Dannevirke last week, arrived in Wellington with her father, Mr Thomas Shirley, in the ship Aurora, in 1841. Mr Shirley througn Rangihaeata's war was a member of the colonial militia. The family was in close touch with the Maoris, and it is stated that information given to Mrs Whitehead by a Maori woman eDabled the military to be sent for in time to prevent a raid by the natives.

Sophia AVhitehead, who died at Dannevirk♭ last week, arrived iu Wellington with her father, Air Thomas Shirley, in tho ship Aurora, in 1841. Mr Shirley remained in tho province till 1853, passing through Rangihaeata?s war as a member of tho colonial militia. The family was in close touch with the Maoris, and it is stated that information given to Airs Whitehead by a ŒMaori woman enabled the military to bo sent for in time to prevent a raid by the natives. Airs Whitehead was married at St. Peter?s Church, Wellington, in 1853, and lived for some years at tho Hutt. The family then went to Canterbury for a few years, finally settling near Waipawa, Hawke?s Bay. Airs Whitehead?s surviving family includes, according to the ?Advocate.? Alessrs John, Stephen, and Richard Whitehead, of Dannevirke, and Richard and Edward Whitehead, of the Weber district; Airs Alfred Herbert and Mrs John Sergeant, of Weber; Airs Joseph Ooseey, Eltham; Airs G.
