Edward (Captain) Mein Chaffers was born on 30 August 1806 in Portsea Island, Portsmouth, HAMP, ENG.1,2,3,4,5 He and Dinah (Diana) Strickland were married on 16 October 1830 in St George's Church, Halifax, Nova Scotia.1 He died on 10 August 1845, at age 38, in on board HMS Warspite, in Beirut, committed suicide.1

Shipwright, born in Kent. In 1821 Joseph sailed to Sydney on board the whaling ship 'Nordford' accompanied by his brother James. They arrived at Port Nicholson in 1822 or 1823. He married Harena Kawamu (see the Name record for Kauamo) and they had James b 1837, Eleanor (Harena) b 1841, Rebecca b 1846 and Maryann b 1844. The family lived at Petone, Queen Charlote Sound and later New Plymouth, where Joseph and Harena both died and are buried. Conflicting information has Joseph and James arriving in Sydney on 5 Jan 1823 on board the 'Thetis' and coming onto NZ five months later in a ship owned by Captain Thoms (see 77-124). For names and dates of birth of their issue see 77-124, and also `Nga Tupuna o Te Whanganui-a-Tara' Vol 3 (Wellington City Council & Wellington Tenths Trust, 2005)

note: National Library has a number of references to this family. He immigrated to ENG to AUS to NZ about 1836 other accounts have arrived abt 1822 or 1823.5 He was in boat building, Hutt Valley, in 1839.6,7,1

BELL brought him to Mana Island. BELL died so he went with John (Tommy) EVANS to Tokumapuna island near Kapiti. Then joined the Tory in 1839 as interpreter. Eventually went back to Tokumapuna. CRC?
note: CCBA has father alive 1842 and was a passenger on the "Wallaby" returning from Mana to Laucenston. CCBA. John (KNOCKS) Knox immigrated to to Mana Island from Sydney in 1836 aged nine. Was an orphan. Came with BELL.2 He was in interpreter for NZ Coy. in 1839.2
