Widowed wife of George HUNTER. George and Helen arrived in Wellington on the "Duke of Roxburgh" in 1840, with their family of 10 children. One of the original purchasers of a one-acre block in the city (in Dixon Street), George was very much involved in business and politics. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace, a Magistrate in 1842, and then elected as Wellington's first mayor in October 1842. He died unexpectedly while still in office. Helen Souter immigrated to ENG to NZ on the Duke of Roxburgh arriving NZ 8/2/1840 on 10 May 1839.3

Of Yellow Fever and is buried in a tomb located under the floor of St Andrews Parish Church, Halfway Tree Road, Jamaica. The tomb is located partially under the bench seats inside and is covered by an 8 x 4 foot slab of white marble. The monument has the following inscription:


"Under This Slab Are Deposited The Bodies Of Thomas George Shortland Esquire Who Was A Post Captain In And The Commissioner of His Majesties Navy Resident At Port Royal And Died On The 23rd Day of November 1827
