OBITUARY.
LATE MR M. NICCOL. The late Mr Malcolm Niccol, whose death took place at Auckland on Monday evening, had practically seen the northern city develop from a small village to its present size. Born in 1844, the second son of the late Mr Henry Niccol, the deceased gentleman was for many years a shipbroker and agent. During his long residence in Auckland he filled positions on many public bodies. He was first Mayor of Devonport, occupying that office consecutively for five years. Mr Niccol was also the prime mover in the establishment of the New Zealand Natives? Association, being elected the first president. He was also a member of the Auckland Harbour Board for over 20 years, and filled the chair on several occasions. F.or many years Mr Niccol?s home was at Devonport, and he ever took the keenst interest in the progress of that marine suburb. He was also much interested in gold mining, being at various times chairman of no less than twenty companies. Deceased twice aspired to Parliamentary honours, unsuccessfully contesting the Eden seat on each occasion, but had a very narrow contest with the late Mr John Bollard in the last election, being only defeated by four votes. Mr Niccol was a veteran of the Maori War, having served with the Auckland Volunteers, being under fire at Wairoa South in 1863'. Deceased occupied a prominent position for about half a century in the Masonic Fraternity. When the movement was started to form a Grand Lodge of New Zealand, Mr Niccol entered into it with his characteristic enthusiasm. In 1890 the Grand Lodge, N.Z.C., came into being and Mr Niccol was appointed the first Grand Superintendent for Auckland district, and succeeded Mr Henry Thomson of Christchurch as Grand Master, being the second to fill that important position. In 1900 Mr Niccol was appointed Grand Secretary, which position he filled with great ability until May, 1921, when advancing years caused him to tender his resignation. During his long term of office as Grand Secretary, Mr Niccol very largely contributed to the wonderful progress made by the New Zealand constitutions of Freemasons. Since his retirement he had lived at Epsom. He is survived by Mrs Niccol and the following children: Mr Harry Niccol, .of Auckland? Mr "William Niccol, of Palmerston North; Mr Malcolm Niccol, of Sydney; Mr Ernest Niccol, of Mercury Bay: Miss Jessie Niccol, of Epsom ; Mrs J. Cruichshank, of Tuakau; Mrs Ernest Keely, of Devonport; Mrs M. Gibson, of Morningside; and Mrs E. Steeds, of Wellington. The youngest son, Mr Norrie Niccol, was killed in France during the Great War. There are 16 grandchildren.

Biography

Henry Smith was born about 1790.1,2 He and Mere Werahiko were married about 1840 in Rawene, Northland, NZ.2
Was a Pakeha Maori. DNZB p 328.
Previously had SMITH as coming to BOI on the Active nov 1814 with source as Judith BINNEY but can't find reference again. Could have been one of the stowaway convicts, perhaps the one that escaped during that visit by the Active 1814 / 1815.
there was a R H SMITH who signed petition to King William IV 1837 JL
from email Paul WORTH 9 nov 2009
Henry Smith = Mere Werahiko (my great, great grandparents). They lived around the Opononi and Southern Hokianga area around the mid 1800's. I was told by a relation that he believed Henry and Mere were married at Rawene in 1840. I can't verify that but it's a start. If that is the case they could be Abraham's Godparents?? I don't even know when they died or where they are buried.

I was told from the Auckland Catholic Church Archives that there was a Henare Mete from the Hokianga (Henry Smith in Maori) who had a conditional baptism in 1862 when he was 25 years old. They are going to do a bit more research on that name. This Henare Mete could have had this conditional baptism to marry Mere Werahiko??? Need to confirm this though. A family member also told me that Henry Smith was a gun smuggler in the Hokianga which I suppose fits into the timeframe of the land wars of the mid 1800's. However I can't confirm or deny that story too.

So there are a few leads to go by but it just requires a little more digging to find it out. With Mere Werahiko I have asked the NZ Catholic Archives in Auckland if they can can help me out with her. I am wondering if Mere has any connection to the Whirinaki chief Papahia who was baptised into the Catholic Church around 1839 by Bishop Pompallier. The Bishop's second name was Francis and in Maori it is Werahiko and this the name Papahia took after his baptism. Hopefully we'll find something from the archives.
I
Abraham Smith = Eleanor Maria Campbell (great grandparents). Abraham Smith was born 28 Feb 1873 at Opononi, Hokianga. He was a Master Mariner and apparently one of the first Maori to get his Masters ticket . He worked around the Kaipara harbour and also the Waihou river near Te Aroha and Paeroa. Abraham was also known as Aperahama, or Pera for short, which is Abraham in Maori. Eleanor Maria Campbell was born 20 June 1877 at Aratapu, Northern Wairoa. Abraham and Eleanor were married 6 May 1896 at the residence of Eleanor's fathers home, Richard E. Campbell, at Aratapu, Northern Wairoa. The witnesses to their wedding was Elizabeth Annie Martin of Aratapu and Alfred Ernest Campbell of Aratapu. The Officiating Minister was Samuel John Gibson. Both Abraham and Eleanor died around the Te Aroha area and are buried at Te Aroha cemetery.

Abraham had two sisters that I know of, one was a Polly/Pollyana?? Smith and the other a Dorothy Perehatara. I believe Dorothy's married name was Perehatara, I could be wrong though. Perehatara is Belshazzar in Maori. There is a photo of Abraham and his family held by a Werahiko relation up at Whirinaki so Abraham definitely had other siblings.

I am in contact with a relation back home in NZ (I live in OZ) and I will ask her if she knows of anymore information. But like me she has little leads too.
