OBITUARY.
LATE MR M. NICCOL. The late Mr Malcolm Niccol, whose death took place at Auckland on Monday evening, had practically seen the northern city develop from a small village to its present size. Born in 1844, the second son of the late Mr Henry Niccol, the deceased gentleman was for many years a shipbroker and agent. During his long residence in Auckland he filled positions on many public bodies. He was first Mayor of Devonport, occupying that office consecutively for five years. Mr Niccol was also the prime mover in the establishment of the New Zealand Natives? Association, being elected the first president. He was also a member of the Auckland Harbour Board for over 20 years, and filled the chair on several occasions. F.or many years Mr Niccol?s home was at Devonport, and he ever took the keenst interest in the progress of that marine suburb. He was also much interested in gold mining, being at various times chairman of no less than twenty companies. Deceased twice aspired to Parliamentary honours, unsuccessfully contesting the Eden seat on each occasion, but had a very narrow contest with the late Mr John Bollard in the last election, being only defeated by four votes. Mr Niccol was a veteran of the Maori War, having served with the Auckland Volunteers, being under fire at Wairoa South in 1863'. Deceased occupied a prominent position for about half a century in the Masonic Fraternity. When the movement was started to form a Grand Lodge of New Zealand, Mr Niccol entered into it with his characteristic enthusiasm. In 1890 the Grand Lodge, N.Z.C., came into being and Mr Niccol was appointed the first Grand Superintendent for Auckland district, and succeeded Mr Henry Thomson of Christchurch as Grand Master, being the second to fill that important position. In 1900 Mr Niccol was appointed Grand Secretary, which position he filled with great ability until May, 1921, when advancing years caused him to tender his resignation. During his long term of office as Grand Secretary, Mr Niccol very largely contributed to the wonderful progress made by the New Zealand constitutions of Freemasons. Since his retirement he had lived at Epsom. He is survived by Mrs Niccol and the following children: Mr Harry Niccol, .of Auckland? Mr "William Niccol, of Palmerston North; Mr Malcolm Niccol, of Sydney; Mr Ernest Niccol, of Mercury Bay: Miss Jessie Niccol, of Epsom ; Mrs J.
