James Grant
M, #16072, b. about 1820
Biography
James Grant was born about 1820.
1,2,3 17 june 1843 present at Wairau Massacre engaged on survey work CW
Our NZ Grants are on my husband?s side of the family.
The family was the well known Grant Brothers? carriers in Nelson. They are mentioned in the Cyclopedia of NZ 1897-1902.
The information passed down through the family was that the first of that family to arrive in NZ was James Grant, the surveyor, who survived the ?Wairau Affray? in 1843. His name appears amongst the list of survivors in the Nelson Examiner, 23/12/1843, on Paperspast.
This is the only reference I have found to this James. I haven?t done a lot of work on this part of the family tree for a while.
I did get the marriage certificate of Robert Grant [Carter] & Susannah Bird, hoping to get my next clue, but there was no mention of their parents. The marriage took place on 11/6/1868, at the residence of WM Dalton, Milton St, Nelson.
James Grant, the surveyor, is likely to be Robert?s father, but I have no proof, as yet.
I am presuming that Susannah Bird?s parents were Rueban & Ann Bird, who arrived in Nelson on the Fireshire in 1842.
I hope this is of interest to you & I would be interested in any information about the Grants around the 1840s, that you may have. LNDA. James Grant was an engaged in survey work in 1843.
