Another of Auckland's pioneers has psissed away in the person of Mr. Wm. Gorrie, Princes-street, who died suddenly early yesterday morning. He was born at Russell, Bay of Islands, 70 years ago, being the son of one of the earliest settlers in the colony, the late Wm. Gorrie, of Shortlandstreet. Deceased was educated in Auckland at the school of the Rev. John Gorrie, his half-brother, and as a young man entered into business at Thames and Mercury Bay in the strenuous days of the goldfields and the timber trade. He was for some time accountant with Messrs. Brown, Campbell, and Co., and in 1870 joined his brother-in-law, Mr. J. H. Upton, and founded the well-known firm of Upton and Co., Queenstreet, 'in which he was an active partner up to the time of his death. Mr. Gorrie was a keen bowler, and former president of the Northern Bowling Association and Auckland Bowling Club. He was also a prominent member of the Auckland Chess dub. Although he was not a prominent figure in public life, Mr. Gorrie always took a been and practical interest in" civic, educational, artistic, and musical affairs in this city, and he acted as hon. auditor for many of the institutions?of. the .province., .
