OBITUARY.
MR. JAMES GORDON. One of Auckland's oldest residents, Mr. James Gordon, died June 17 at the residence of his daughter, Devonpoit. He was born in Wyndlmm Street, 88 years ago, and when quite young served with the 2nd Waikato Regiment during the war with the Maoris from 1801 to IS6G. Among other affairs he was engaged in the fight at Gate Pa. At the termination of war with the Maoris Mr. Gordon was one of those in the early rush to the Thames gold field,and later lie pegged out"many claims in the Upper Thames district. For a time Mr. Gordon was bridge building between Thames and Te Aroha. He was for many years a member of the Thames Navals and was a fine rifle shot. He retired thirteen years ago, and latterly had lived with his daughter, Mrs. R. Fredatovicli, Victoria Road, Devonport, Mr. Gordon was twice married. There were three children by the first marriage, Mr. G. Gordon, of Auckland, Mr. LʿGordon, of Bay of Islands, and Mrs. M. Haslett, of Auckland. By the second marriage there were 12 children: Air V. Gordon, Otaliuhu; Mr. C. Gordon, Pa tea; Air. H. Gordon, Portland; Air.'A. Gordon, Hawera; Air. AI. Gordon, Auckland; Air. W. Gordon, Waiuku; and Mr. E. Gordon, Auckland; Airs A. Buclianm Devonport; Airs. R. I'redatovicli, Devonport; Airs. L. AfcArthur, Devonport- Airs. 11. Johaiiessan, Devonport; Mrs/ V. Stafford, Auckland. Airs. Gordon survives her husband. The funeral took place at O'Neill's Point Cemetery.

Possible marriage: 1871 Drusilla Annie BULL.

DEATH OF MR. J. GORDON.
One of Auckland's Œ earliest pioneers passed away at hie residence, Waterloo Quadrant, last evening in the person of Mr John Gordon, J;P., a -well-known identity of the city and district for the past 68 years. The deceased's health had been failing.for- some time past. !' '.Mr Gordon was a direct descendant of the historical Highland Gordons. He was born in Edinburgh-jin 1829, and aririved -with,his parents in the year 1840 at the Bay of Islands, where his father received an appointment under the Gd-l vernment. He was educated at the Bay of Isjanite Government; ""Sfchool, Œwhere he was presented with a prize by ;Mrs Hobson, wife of the first Governor of New Zealand. The family arrived in Auckland at the end of 1840, and at the. first Government land sale his father purchased the land in Waterloo Quadrant, on which the late Mr Gordon resided. After his father's, death, he Œtook charge of ,a farm at Otahuhu, and afterwards let it, and started a commission business in Otahuhu. The, deceased .served in the Maori -ware -with the Royal Cavalry Volunteers, and was afterwards in command of the Otahuhu Rifle Volunteers. He was a member of the first Diocesan Synod of Auckland to represent Papakura, an office he held for 16 years. From 1868 to 18T3 Œhe was a member of the Auckland Provincial Council, and was also at times chairman of .the Otahuhu Road Board, and member of the Otahuhu School and licensing committees. In 1865 he was appointed secretary to the New Zealand Agricultural Association; and held the position for a number of years. In 1887 he removed to Auckland.

Mr Gordon was highly esteemed in Auckland,: and his decease will be deeply regretted by the many friends he has made in. the district .for over half a century past. He'leaves.ji grown-up family. The interment wilT be private. John Gordon immigrated to arrived Russell 17 mar 1840 on the Westminster in 1840 JGO has arrived Auckland 1840 on the Westminster.1,2
