The death has occurred at Raglan, in her 99th year, of Mrs Rachael Moon, widow of the late Mr George Moon and eldest daughter of the late Mr Gregor McGregor, a number of whose family resided in the Northern Wairoa from 1839 until just recently. Deceased was a powerful swimmer and saved three persons from, drowning in the Wairoa river. She left the district for Raglan on her marriage in 1862.

ONE YEAR SHORT.
ALMOST CENTENARIAN. DEATH OF MRS. RACHEL MOON CAME TO NEW ZEALAND IX IS3S (By Telegraph.?Own Correspondent.) RAGLAN, this day. The last of a very long-lived family Mrs. Rachael Moon, has just died here aged 99 years. She was one of the McGregors who came to New Zealand ir IS3S, landing .at Kawhia, and a yeai later went to the Northern Wairoa. Mrs Moon's last brother, Mr. John McGregor died at his old home up the Norther? \airoa Kiver a few years ago, and In also was very near the hundred years mark. He remembered walking over the fern-covered site of Auckland before there was any suggestion of a town evei being built there. The McGregors originally came fron: Perthshire, and arrived in Australia ii: 1835. Mr. McGregor was in charge of e gang of convicts working for the Government carpenters. A short while aftej arriving in Australia he was sent across to Xew Zealand to obtain spars for the .Royal Navy. Bringing his family witl him, he decided to settle here. Mrs. Moon was born in 1830 near Loci Rannocli, in the Highlands. When the family came to New Zealand she was eight years of age, and could only speak Gaelic. The next language she "learnec was Maori, and her third was English The McGregors were good friends of the Maoris, but nevertheless they had ar anxious time in 1845 when Heke's wai broke out at the Bay of Islands. Those who have read the most interesting boo± by Buller, the Weslevan missionary, whe had a mission station higher up the Wairoa River than the McGregor home and was their nearest neighbour, wil remember it was a case of touch'arid gc with, the V 7 est Coast natives joining Heke's forces in the fight against the pakeha. Mrs. Moon had many interesting memories of those exciting times; exciting, but also Arcadian, because ir those days life in such an out-of-the-wav place as the Wairoa was very primitive the few settlers having to depend upor their own exertions for practically al their necessities. Eor instance, the ok house which Mrs. Moon's brother livee in, on the banks of the river, had not ai iron nail in it, every board and sCantlin;. being held in place by wooden pegs, oi what the boat-builders call trenails. . A powerful swimmer as a girl, Mrs Moon saved three lives on the treacherous Wairoa. Sixty-seven years ago this month she was married at Auckland tf the late Mr. George Moon, the ceremonj being performed by the Rev. Davie Bruce, of St. Andrew's Presbyteriar Church. Immediately after the marriage the Moons went to live at Raglan, and thai was Mrs. Moon's home until she died She was wonderfully hale in spite of liei years, and up to a few weeks ago usee to go out walking every day. Rachael McGREGOR immigrated to arrived Kaipara 1839 on the Bee in 1839.1,2

Auckland Star, 21 April 1927: OBITUARY. MR. J. C. ROBINSON - 78 YEARS' RESIDENT

Another early resident of Auckland died during Easter in the person of Mr. Joshua Caleb Robinson. He was born in Fort Street 78 years ago, and had lived here practically the whole of his life. As a lad Mr. Robinson went with his parents farming in the Pukekohe district. He remembered at the outbreak of war with the Maoris having been sent with other lads to warn various settlers. The Robinson family returned to Auckland to live while the war lasted. Mr. Robinson was apprenticed to the business which afterwards developed into the well-known firm of Hill and Plummer. Ltd.

When the Thames goldlields opened he tried his luck on the diggings. Later he returned to Auckland and settled down at his trade. Subsequently Mr Robinson started business on his own account in Ponsonby, where for many vears he resided.

In his younger days Mr. Robinson was an energetic worker in the Temperance and Band of Hope movement of that day. He was one of the early members of the Ponsonby Bowling Club, and played with that club for a number of years, subsequently being associated with the Dominion Road and Mount Eden Clubs. Deceased had a genial disposition and made many friends amongst those with whom he associated. both in business and social life. He was predeceased by his wife, who was a daughter of Sir Edwin Tremain, at Auckland, and is survived by a family of three sons and three daughters.
