Paroa Bay from wiki
Raro-ngaua was a pa on the eastern side of the Parua Bay entrance in the early 19th century. In 1821 or 1822, this pa was attacked by a group of Ngati Paoa and Waikato warriors, as part of the Musket Wars.[6]
In 1838, Thomas Stewart Scott and two partners bought land on the western side of the bay and set up a shipbuilding yard. The Governor Fitzroy, a schooner of about 43 feet (13 m), was one of the ships built here. Manganese ore lay in lumps on the point to the south of the shipyard, then known as Te Waro but now called Manganese Point. The ore was sold in 1844.[7] In 1849, a hydrographic survey was made of Whangarei Harbour by Captain Lort Stokes in the paddle-steamer HMS Acheron. He named Parua Bay "Bad Maori Bay" and Manganese Point "Annoyance Point wiki

Yarrawonga.
A poor old man named Flower Russell, aged 67 years, was found drowned in the Murray River on Saturday evening last.
It is rumoured here that he said he would commit suicide on account of the great pain he had been suffering from a cancer on the neck.
I viewed the remains at the Mulwala police station on Sunday.
The poor old man was laid down on the ground with a few boughs of gum tree under and over him with an old bag covering his face.
He was dressed in a pair of old moleskin trousers, lace up boots, and an old handkerchief tied round his neck.
He had been missing since the 24th of November, and is supposed to have been in the river all the time.
N.B.
Flower Russell was born in England on 12th April 1813.
He died circa 25th November 1889.
His age would be 76, not 67

Their names are James Hume and Flowers Russell. About two tons of earth fell in on them, and completely covered them up; two other men that were down the claim at the same time, soon had them extricated from their perilous position, and removed to the Maryborough District Hospital.
