NINETY YEARS A RESIDENT,
Mr. Henry Andrew, of Haughill Farm, Howick, who was admitted to the Auckland Hospital a week ago suffering from injuries due to a fall, died yesterday, aged 90 years. He'had lived all his life in Auckland district, having been born in Mechanics' Bay the day after his parents landed from the ship Duchess of Argyle. In 1870 he was married to Miss Emma Sharp, and in March, 1930, they celebrated their diamond jubilee. When Mr. Andrew, senior, settled at Haughill Farm there was no township of Howick, which was later established as a " pensioners'" settlement, Mr. Andrew, senior, having the contract for supplying the blocks for the erection of the cottages. Howick was prepared, as a model village, and the churches and houses were ready for the colonists when they arrived.
In August, 1860, Mr. Henry Andrew, who was then 24 years of. age; left Howick for Thames, attracted by the gold discoveries. After nine months on the goldfields, he returned, to the farm at Howick. When the two brothers, Nicholas and Richard Trust, were murdered by natives at Whitford; the volunteer cavalry, of which Mr. Andrew was a member, received orders to proceed to the scene. The bodies of the two boys were recovcvd and a tomahawk with bloodstains was found near them, but no natives were encountered. The cavalry then went to Brookby, where the settlers had been frightened from their homes by the hostile attitude of the Maoris. Although ample evidence was found of the activities of the natives, the party returned once more without any fighting. The cavalry went out twice during the same year, but the Maoris kept well out of sight.
Mr. Andrew was for some time chairman of the old Paparoa Road Board and also a member of the Howick School Committee. He was, in addition, a foundation member of Howick Oddfellows' Lodge. Mrs. Andrew, who is now 83 years old, enjoys good health. There are the following children:?Mrs. Walter Amiss, of Howick; Mr. H. B. Andrew, headmaster of the Grafton School; Mr. E. E. Andrew, headmaster of the Waiht School; Mr. W. E. Andrew, of Auckland; and Mr. A. Andrew, Mr. J. J. Andrew and Mr. F. Andrew, all of Howick. There are seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He immigrated to arrived Auckland 9 oct 1842 on the Duchess of Argyle in 1842.
