While I cannot find the page online any longer, attached is a pdf of the 1828 Convict Absconders list showing John O'Brien, Countess of Harcourt aged 19 escaped in 1828. This together with these facts:-
1 Arrival of a J O'Brien from Sydney to the Hokianga, prior to 1839 and purchasing land from the natives. (likely 1828-1834)
2 No further mention of O'Brien in Hokianga
3 No apparent arrival of John Wright, blacksmith to Hokianga/Bay of Islands
4 Blacksmith named Wright on Hokianga in 1834 (Markham)
5 My DNA having the signature of an O'Brien
All this tends to show a possibility of John O'Brien assuming the name of John Wright on the Hokianga."
