OBITUARY
MR. JOHN HARPUR. On Saturday last, there passed away at his Hanagtiki home, John Harpur, who has had a most interesting career. He was born at Waimate over 84 years ago, and was the son of an oldtime whaler and Maori chieftainess of high rank in the Ngaitahu tribe. For a time the son followed the sea, and told of thrilling adventures. Most of his life, however, was spent in sawmilling, and he had followed this occupation at Invercargill, Hokitika, Greymouth, Dannevirke, Taranaki, Taihape and Hangatiki. The late Mr. Harpur came to Hangatiki some 21 years ago, and was an active worker until he reached the age of 76, only retiring eight years ago. In his day he was a great athlete and footballer, and no mean wrestler, defeating at one time, the famous Harry Dunn.
In 1882 he was married in Dunedin to Miss Anne Elliot. Of the marriage there were the following children, all of whom are living: Miss Mary Dixon, of Kopaki; John, of Arohena; Rupert, of Hangatiki; Mrs. W. Treloar, of Edgecumbe; Harry, of Hangatiki; W-illiam, of Mamakau; and Mrs. Vera Cavanagh, of Rotorua. There are 40 grandchildren and 24 great-grand-children. The sympathy of the community is extended to all who mourn his departure especially his widow and family.
A funeral service in St. Andrew?s Presbyterian Church, Te Kuiti, was conducted by the Rev. S. W. Webber, of Otorohanga, and Rev. W. T. Brabyn, of Te Kuiti. The service at the graveside was taken by the Rev. W. S. Webber.
