William King

M, #9961, b. about 1810
Pedigree Link

Family: Heihei

DaughterEliza King+ (b. about 1842, d. 22 July 1913)

Biography

William King was born about 1810.1 He and Heihei were married.
Pre-1846 I have a William King and his wife Heihei in Northland - possibly Bay of Islands or Horeke and Taheke - according to Rae Meurants book "YAR" A MAN OF THE NORTHERN WAIROA ~ MEURANT he was a sea captain but I have my doubts on that and when I spoke to her she said some years after writing it she had doubts too. I think if he was his name would have been more visible whereas I only have him named on a baptism and my great-grandfather's (also William King) marriage certificate circa 1881 at Rawene.
Supposedly the ship may have been called the Harlequin and there was one named that in the area.
He would have arrived in NZ pre-1839 as I have a certified baptism certificate from the Weslyan archives in Ellerslie Auckland for his daughter Eliza King (later married James Martin) naming both parents as Wllliam King and (his wife) Heihei unfortunately their records did not have a marriage for them that I could find.
A bit of a long shot but you never know so I would appreciate a check of your records, all the rest of my early NZ interests do not arrive until 1849-50 and are more placed in Auckland.
Eliza King was born circa 1839 NZSG has a brief reference to this in the "pedigree collection" submitted by a member named Brian Smith in the 1980s. A lady at the Dargaville NZSG also had been researching this for someone in recent years named Terry Smith in the early 2000s (now deceased) it is all tantalisingly close but I have not been able to draw it any closer together than that.
The actual baptism was 1843 at Maungungu Mission House as per the Weslyan record books at Ellerslie Auck was by the looks of a "mass" baptism 1843 that is the verified certificate I have. I say a "mass" baptism as when I went deeper into the ICI index for NZ and ordered a LDS film it had many of the names common to the North in early NZ and across the bottom of the film was Mangungu Maori Mission that was what lead me to record books they hold at Ellerlie.

Many thanks

Thanks Tony. I was aware of a number of Pakeha whaling stations in and around Wellington andd this is a likely source. I'll follow up the Capt England as he may have been the father.
The person asking me who lives in Brisbane is looking for parents or anything that will help him understand who he was. WGE left Auckland in 1860 and on his marriage in Sydney two years later he declared his birth and date which is all they know. I'm trying to find a local Maori historian but this has not been easy.
