OBITUARY

MR. JOHN JAMIESON.

The death has occurred at his late residence, St. Mary-street, Wellington, of Mr. John Jamieson, one of the pioneers of the printing trade, and a gentleman respected and esteemed by a wide circle of friends. Born at Falkirk, Scotland, the late Mr. Jamieson came out to-New Zealand when a lad of 19. He was a compositor on the Weekly Press, Christchurch, in the early days, a.nd then was at Hokitika for sometime, during which period he ran a paper in the goldfields, and made many friends among the mining community. He then transferred to Wellington, and was on the staff of the old Independent newspaper- (under the ownership of the late Mr. T. W. M'Kenzie and Mr. W. M. Mui'r, of Majoribanks-street)... Later he was on the Government Printing Office staff, and, at the time of the memorable, strike of composi'ors, was one of the participants. In Πthis connection, the late Mr. Jamieson was the perpetrator of -what was regarded, (and still is rememhf red with amusement) as one of the jokes of the day. The Government Printing Office made an effort to secure relief from the Hokitika district, and on learning of this, Mr. Jamieson (who was "father of the chapel") endeavoured to send a telegram through explaining the position, and stopping the departure of men. The telegram was refused, so Mr. Jamieson hit upon the expedient of having the substance of the wire translated into Germaiv and sent to the German keeper of a hotel frequented by members o! the printing trade. The telegram was accepted, and the result was that the relief did not come. After the strike, Mr. Jamieson did not return: to the Government office, but joined the Evening Post, where he remained for some years, retiring owing to failing eyesight. He was later on the messenger staff of the Government Insurance Office, from which he retired on pension, and he had been since living privately. The late Mr. Jamieson leaves a widow and a family. Mrs. G. Halliday (Hataitai), Mrs. W. R. Aekins (Rona Bay), Mr. Frank Jamieson (Shannon), Mr. John Jamieson (on active service),',Mr. G. Stoddart (South Africa), Mr. A. Stoddart (Sydney), Mrs. C. H. Usmar , (Palmerston" North), and Mrs. C. Mitchell (Hataitai) are the members of the family (the latter four being step-child-ren), to whom, with the widow, sincere sympathy will be extended. '.
