GOLDEN WEDDING.
FIFTY YEARS IN AUCKLAND.
WHALING. DAYS RECALLED.
Memories of New Zealrpd in the days of the pioneers, when whalers frequently called in for stores, were reviewed by the celebration of the golden wedding of Mr and Mrs. Matthew Martin, of 271. Karangahape Road, which took place on Monday in the Druids Hall, North Street. Mr. Martin, who was born in Victoria Street, Auckland in 1851, is a son of the late Mr. Antonio Martin, one of Auckland's earlv settlers. Mr. Antonio Martin landed in New Zealand from a whaling vessel and later was the proprietor of the Victoria Hotel and also ovjied a number of small vessels running in the coastal trade. Mrs. Matthew Martin was born at Brighton, in England, and she made the voyage to Auckland in a sailing ship, landing here 57 years ago. Both Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Martin have grown up with the city and can recall many notable changes during their half century of married life. Mr. Martin, like his father, followed the sea as a youth, and for 16 years had command of vessels owned by his father. One of Mr. Ajitonio Martin's coasters a cutter, won the cup at the Auckland Regatta in 1862. The cup, which was presented by the superintendent of Auckland Province, is now in the Old _ Colonists' Museum, in the Library Buildings. After Mr. Matthew 1 Martin- left the sea he was employed by Messrs. T. and H. Hall, storemen in Auckland. Later he went into the carpentering trade, and, with advancing years, he ultimately embarked upon his present business, as a furniture dealer. Over 50 people, ihe majority of whom were descendants, attended the! golden wedding celebration. Three sons and three daughters, 29 grandchildren and three great-gran dchildrrji were present, and the old people received many kindly congratulations upon their long married life.
