1. I am trying to find the birth of George Cornelius Rees who spent most of his life in Wanganui. Can anyone help me?
Born C1829, (Est from his death Certificate and marriage certificate)
Born in Bow, Middlesex (from his Marriage Certificate but his death certificate gave birth place as Poplar however this was his address before coming to NZ
Mother: Mary Cornelius (from his Marriage Certificate)
Father: Joseph Rees (Joseph claimed he adopted his son George Cornelius Rees)
Married: 17 June 1881 in Wanganui, NZ to Elizabeth Woodgate also known as Riki Maggie Rees
Died: Wanganui 26 Oct 1894 age 65.
His father Joseph married Mary Taylor 15 Feb 1831 in Westham and the family came to NZ in 1851
George Cornelius Rees appears to have come to NZ in 1842 at about age 13 as his death certificate stated he had been in NZ 52 years but there is also an indication he may have come in 1845. When he came to NZ he was looked after his uncle by Dr George Rees (who became the Colonial Surgeon based in Wanganui) who settled in Wanganui in 1841
2. George Cornelius Rees became a well-known M?ori language interpreter and in his obituary was described as being the oldest Native Interpreter in the North Island and President of the North Island Native Interpreters Association.
Does anyone know if the North Island Interpreters Association records are held anywhere? He immigrated about 1845 possibly 1842 as death cert staes in NZ 52 yrs.¹
