James Duncan was born on 1 February 1813 at Airdrie, near Glasgow, Scotland, the son of a Lanarkshire baker, James Duncan, and his wife, Marrian Hill. After studying at Glasgow University from 1836 to 1838, he attended the Theological Hall of the Reformed Presbyterian Church at Paisley from 1839 to 1841, and was ordained on 22 September 1842 as the church's first missionary to the Maori. On 20 September 1842, at Carriden, West Lothian, he married Christian Struthers; they were to have four children.DNZB

One of Auckland?s oldest colonists, in the person of Mr. Joseph Cochrane, died at Coromandel on Thursday last, at the age of 88 years. He arrived ,in New Zealand with his parents during 1839, landing at Kororareka, and was present when Captain Hobson proclaimed British sovereignty over the country in January, I840. He immigrated to arrived BOI from Sydney 9 aug 1840 on the Delhi in 1840.

Born in England 1813 and graduated as a physician in Edinburgh 1836. Sailed to New Zealand as a surgeon on the Olympus 1840. Member of Parliament 1853-70 and four times elected Superintendent of Wellington. Appointed Agent General for New Zealand in London in 1870 where he died on 21st June 1876. Featherston in the Wairarapa was named after him in 1854.
