Sarah St. Clair Gilfillan was born in Whanganui to parents Mary and John Gilfillan. As a small child, she escaped a violent attack on her home at Matarawa with her brother John. The attack occurred on April 18th 1847, when a group of young Maori from the upper Whanganui River allegedly sought retribution for the shooting of their relative Hapurona Ngarangi. The Gilfillan family had settled in Matarawa in 1842 and were living in relative isolation. Years later, Sarah Gilfillan gave an account of the attack on her family, published in 1888.
After the attack at Matarawa, John Gilfillan and his three children Mary Jane, Sarah and John, moved to Sydney. They stayed there until some time in the 1870s when the three siblings moved back to Whanganui. John Gilfillan (junior) tragically drowned in Lake Rotorua on May 27th 1875 at 35 years of age. The sisters spent time at the Lambhill residence in Warrengate, with their nephew Alexander, who was the son of their elder sister Georgianna. Sarah Gilfillan died on April 21st 1924 at age 83, after a trapping accident. Sarah St Clair Gilfillan had person sources.
