Our Coromandel correspondent informs that the unfortunate man, Alexander Brooks who was drowned there some days ago, and whose body has just been recovered, was believed to have been eighty-two years ol age when he met with his death. He was, it is said, a seaman on board the man-of-war Buffalo, when she was wrecked at Mercury Bay, an event which occurred ii 1839 or 1840.

COROMANDEL, Monday. _,The body of the unfortunate old man was discovered yesterday afternoon, on the beach near Preece's Point, and was brought in to the Bridge Hotel. A verdict of found drowned was returned by the jury on the inquest held this morning. Deceased was supposed to be named Alexander Brooks, and was said to be 82 years old when he met his death on the night of his arrival here per the Lalla Rookh. He was a native of Trinidad, and was a seaman on board the man-of-war Buffalo at the time she was wrecked at Mercury Bay. Alexander Brooks was a seaman on the Buffalo in 1842.1

DEATH OF MRS HOWELL. A painfully sudden death occurred at Paraparaumu on Monday night, when Mrs W. Howell. one of the distracts oldest and most respected residents,' passed to the Great Beyond, aged 72 years. Deceased. who had always enjoyed good health up till within (.about ten years ago,' saw many of the hardships of the early days. She was born on July Ist, 1846, at Cloudy Bay, her parents,' Mr and Mrs Gilbert, settling there after arrival in the second emigrant ship from the Old Country.. They first landed on tlae Petone beach from the Bengal Merchant in 1810, but very soon after took up residence in the South Island. Mr Gilbert was drowned in the VVairoa river when Mrs Howell was an infant. With her mother she took up residence at Lower Hutt. where she resided for same time, eventually marrying in the Church of Etngland, Wellington, in 1864, the Rev. Fred Thatcher being the officiating minister. Later, after residence at Pahauitanui. Mr and Mrs Howell took up residence in Paraparaumu. living at Whare Mauku for a number of years, and then settling in"Paraparaumu township, where they lived a life full of enjoyment. On Monday Mra Howell attended. to her household duties as usual. Shortly before 11 p.m. she was seized with a fit of coughing and within a quarter of an hour ftom the attack Mrs Howell passed peacefully away in the presence of her husband and son. The late Mrs Howell, besides beang very highly respected, had befriended many a person, and her most kindly acts were always carried out in a spirit that did her credit.. Sttio had bean a great friend in many in cases of sickness, and ofttimes her advice was sought in serious cases. She gave of her best ungrudgingly. Mrs Howell was also an enthusiastic gardener, and her flowers were always much admired, her garden being regarded as one of the best and brightest on the coast. Among those left_to mourn their loss are six daughters and five sons ?Mre Geo. Taylor, of Otaki; Mrs S. Corner, Reikiorangi: Mrs Malcolm McLean, Paraparaumu; Mrs Eobt. McLean, Paraparaumu; Mrs Hcffer. Waikanae; and Mrs Clunic, Paraparaumu; Messrs William, Frank, and Len Howell, of Paraparaumu; Mr J. D. Howell, Otaki; and Private "Bert? Howell, who is now at the front. There are also about forty grandchildren and two great grandchildren. All will have the sympathy of a large circle of friends. Deceased will be buried in the new cemetery at Paraparumu this afternoon.
