Biography

Ann Marsden was born on 2 March 1794 in at sea near Australia.1,2 She and Thomas Hassall were married on 12 August 1822 in Parramatta, NSW, AUS.3
Anne Marsden was the firstborn child of Samuel Marsden and Elizabeth Fristan. She was born on 1st or 2nd March 1794 at sea, within sight of the Australian coast, on the first voyage of the Rev and Mrs Marsden to the penal colony of New South Wales. They were en route to taking up Samuel's appointment as assistant chaplain to the colony.[1][2] She was christened on 21st April in St Phillip's Church of England, Sydney.[3]
Samuel Marsden would soon become one of the colony's most 'colourful' characters; a preacher who was also developed vast farming enterprises and sat as a magistrate, where he earned the title the 'flogging parson' for his severity in awarding sentences; and a military chaplain to New South Wales whilst the first missionary from Australia, to New Zealand.
On 12th August 1822, she married Rev. Thomas Hassall,[4] who was curate to her father at St John's church, Parramatta until 1824.[5] She was "an able and devoted assistant to her husband"[2] and "a woman of determined character [who] had considerable influence with her husband and father."[5] They had three sons and five daughters.
In 1824, her husband was appointed chaplain to the penal settlement of Port Macquarie, then to the Bathurst district, and still later "The Cowpastures" which he described as "Australia beyond Liverpool". He purchased the large Denbigh estate at Cobbitty which became his headquarters.[5] Anne must have spent much time alone and largely raised the children herself, as Thomas, sometimes known as "the galloping parson"[5], travelled to far-reaching areas of his parish.
Thomas passed away in 1868, after which Anne continued to reside at Denbigh for some time, before eventually returning to Parramatta.[2]
Anne passed away, aged 91 years, on 18th June 1885 in Parramatta, and was buried next to her husband at St Paul's Churchyard, Cobbitty.[6][2][4]. Ann Marsden was baptized on 21 April 1794 in Sydney, NSW, AUS.3
