"More Evergreen Memories" by June BLADES being published 2022 has extensive details of George and Maria and their families. Junes email: mailto:juneandpatrick@bigpond.com
Their nephew George Green was a boatbuilder who had to adapt to changing economic conditions in the Colony. He married Maria Bates and a section of the book deals with the Bates family. The excitement and skulduggery of regattas on Sydney Harbour with whaleboat races, rowing and sailing will entertain. On occasion, the waters of the Harbour turned dangerous and resulted in shipwrecks and tragic loss of life. Land speculation, the search for gold and adventure led George and some of his sons to New Zealand. There was no happy ever after for the marriage of George and Maria Bates. After bearing eleven children she tenaciously fought for her legal rights. George was a flawed individual. His treatment of Maria cannot be overlooked or excused. He pursued his passions to the fullest without compromise and constantly searched for new challenges. The love of boatbuilding and sailing has been George's legacy. Part 2 focuses on the lives of each of George and Maria's eleven children, their children and grandchildren. One of their sons, Richard Augustus Willoughby Green is acknowledged as a colonial professional oarsman and his contribution to sculling and rowing is highlighted. Richard's legacy has inspired many to excel in aquatic sports. Richard's wife Frances Johnson was the granddaughter of convict Frances Mills who was another inspirational woman who fought back from despair to reunite her family and to leave an amazing legacy for her children. Frances Johnson's mother Charlotte Oliver was rumoured to be linked to royalty. She was the illegitimate daughter of a servant girl and her eccentric employer, Daniel Dering Matthew. He was baptized on 9 September 1810 in Camberwell, SRY, ENG.10 He was a boat builder, Sydney in 1834.10 He immigrated to to Bluff in 1838.6 He was a cooper, boat builder in 1838.7
